Activities to do today.

Activity 01

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Print or copy the list, then let kids race to spot each item without picking anything up.

• A feather, a Y-shaped stick and a smooth stone

• Three different leaf shapes

• An animal track or a chewed pinecone

• Something that makes a sound in the wind

Activity 02

Build a Bug Hotel

Stack sticks, bark, pinecones and hollow stems inside an open box or tin and leave it at the edge of camp.

• Check it each morning for new guests

• Draw what you find in a camp notebook

• Talk about which bugs help plants grow

• Take the hotel apart before you leave

Activity 03

Cloud Reading

Lie on a blanket and name the clouds. Puffy cotton means fair weather; flat grey sheets mean rain is coming.

• Cumulus: fluffy, fair skies

• Stratus: low grey blanket

• Cirrus: thin, icy wisps high up

• Cumulonimbus: tall and dark — head for shelter

Activity 04

Campfire Cooking Crew

Give every kid one safe job so dinner becomes a team skill instead of a wait.

• Gather tinder, kindling and fuel wood

• Mix foil-packet veggies

• Count to a safe three-metre fire circle

• Toast the marshmallow, then douse the coals together

Learn the wild

Nature school, no classroom.

Field Science

Track & Print Detective

Mud and sand near water hold the best prints. Compare paw shape, claw marks and stride length.

• Four toes and claws → dog family

• Four toes, no claws → cat family

• Five toes like a tiny hand → raccoon

• Photograph with a coin for scale

Night Sky

First Constellations

Start with three easy shapes and build from there on a clear, moonless night.

• Find the Big Dipper, then follow it to Polaris

• Spot Orion’s three-star belt in winter

• Watch for satellites moving in a straight line

• Use red light to protect night vision

Leave No Trace

The Kid’s Code

Six short rules children can actually remember and repeat back to you.

• Pack out everything you pack in

• Stay on the trail

• Look at wildlife, never feed it

• Leave rocks, flowers and shells where they are

Camp Skills

Knots, Maps & Safety

Three practical skills that grow confidence fast.

• Tie a bowline and a two half-hitch

• Read a trail map and name the landmarks

• Memorise: stop, stay put, blow the whistle three times

• Pack a personal kit: water, snack, whistle, layer

Parent tools

Plan it in five minutes.
